Toronto Event Night Traffic: How to Plan Your Ride

On a big event night, downtown Toronto fills up well before the doors open and again right after the final whistle or encore. Plan an earlier pickup, agree a meeting spot away from the main exits, and expect the ride home to start slowly.

  • Leave earlier than the doors-open time
  • Pick a meeting spot off the main exits
  • Expect the ride home to start slowly

Why does downtown clog on event nights?

Downtown holds a lot of large venues close together. Rogers Centre and Scotiabank Arena sit near Union Station, and Exhibition Place hosts big shows on the western waterfront. When a game and a concert land on the same evening, tens of thousands of people head for the same few blocks.

The core also has a limited set of ways in. The Gardiner Expressway, the Don Valley Parkway and Lake Shore Boulevard all carry event traffic along with the regular evening commute, so delays begin on the approach, not only near the venue.

When should I be picked up for the show?

Earlier than a normal evening. Work backwards from the time you want to be in your seat, and add room for the last few blocks, which move slowest. If dinner comes first, tell us the restaurant and the reservation time so the pickup lines up with both.

We suggest a plan once we know the venue and the date. Event nights change from week to week, so a guide cannot hand you a universal number.

Where should the car meet me?

The main entrance is rarely a smart place to meet. Streets get closed to vehicles, police direct traffic, and curbs fill with people waiting for rides. A meeting point a short walk away, on a quieter side street, saves time and is often easier to find.

  • Pick a corner you can describe in one sentence
  • Avoid spots next to the main gates or station exits
  • Share a live location pin if your phone allows it
  • Agree a backup corner in case a street is closed

How does the ride home work?

The first stretch after an event is the slowest. Crowds spill across crosswalks and cars crawl out of the area together. Some groups wait a little before heading out, have a drink nearby or walk to the agreed corner while the crush eases.

Tell us the likely end time and be ready to adjust. A game that goes into extra time or a show with an encore moves everything. Message when you are leaving the building and the driver will meet you at the agreed spot.

Do different events behave differently?

They do. Sports crowds arrive in a wave and leave in a wave. Concerts often have staggered exits, and festivals can close streets for much of the day. Parades and road races block whole corridors. Check the city's event notices for road closures, then tell us the address you will be near. See our sports game and concert pages for more on each type.

A theatre and dinner evening is usually calmer, though it still helps to arrange the return pickup in advance.

Quick answers

Event night questions

Cannot find your answer? Call or email us and we will help.

Can the car wait right outside the venue?
Not always. Street closures and police direction can stop it. We agree on a nearby meeting point instead.
How early should I leave for a big game?
Earlier than a normal evening. Give us the venue, date and start time and we suggest a pickup time.
What if the event runs late?
Message us when you know. We adjust the pickup and tell you if the change affects the booking.
Is it better to be picked up after dinner or before?
Either works. If dinner is part of the night, we can pick up at the restaurant and drive you to the venue.
Do you handle groups going to the same show?
Yes. Send the group size and we suggest the right vehicle category or more than one vehicle.
Can I book the ride home at the same time?
Yes. Booking both legs together makes the plan clearer. The return time can stay flexible.
